Quick Answer

How much do freelancer platform fees and tax reserves reduce your rate?

Platform fees vary by channel: Upwork charges 0%-15% per contract, Fiverr a flat 20%, and direct clients pay only payment processing (about 2.9%). On $100/hour billed through Upwork at an example 10% fee, you keep $90 after the platform fee. This tool then applies the income-tax and self-employment reserve percentages you enter (a common rule of thumb is setting aside 25-35% of net income for taxes) and factors in unbilled admin time to show your effective hourly rate. The reserve figures are money you set aside, not actual tax owed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Upwork really take?
Upwork's service fee varies from 0% to 15% by contract, shown before you accept it. Withdrawal costs also vary by method and location; verify the current amount in your Upwork account.
Is Fiverr's 20% fee worth it?
Fiverr charges a fixed 20% seller fee, while Upwork's fee varies from 0% to 15% by contract. Fiverr handles client acquisition, which can be worth it if you struggle to find clients independently.

How much should I set aside for taxes?
US freelancers: 25-35% (income + self-employment tax). Depends on bracket and deductions.
This is a fee and cash-reserve planning tool for informational purposes only. The income-tax and self-employment percentages are reserves you enter to set money aside - they are applied flatly to after-fee income and are NOT a bracket calculation, actual tax owed, or a promise of net income. It does not model the standard deduction, the deductible half of self-employment tax, retirement contributions, W-2 interaction, credits, or state rules. For actual tax, use the Self-Employment Tax Calculator and a qualified tax professional.

How this calculator works

This estimator shows the cash you keep after fees and the tax reserve you set aside, plus your effective hourly rate. It starts from your gross billed amount (hourly rate times billable hours), subtracts the platform service fee and payment-processing fee you provide, then applies the income-tax and self-employment reserve percentages you enter to the remaining after-fee income. Those tax percentages are reserves you set aside, not actual tax owed: the calculator does not look up IRS brackets, your filing status, the standard deduction, or your state, so you stay in control of the assumptions. It then shows your effective hourly rate once unpaid revision and admin hours are counted.

Formula used
Net = Gross billed - Platform fee - Payment fee - (Income tax % + Self-employment tax %) applied to after-fee income; where Gross = Hourly rate x Billable hours and every fee and tax percentage is user-entered. Effective hourly = Net / (Billable + Revision + Admin hours).

Assumptions

  • All fee and tax percentages are estimates you provide. The calculator does not derive tax from IRS brackets, filing status, or state of residence.
  • The default 15.3% self-employment tax and 22% income tax are starting suggestions, not your exact rates - adjust them to your situation.
  • Taxes are applied as a flat effective rate to your after-fee income, which approximates but does not replace a full Schedule C and Schedule SE calculation.

Limitations

  • This is a planning estimate based on the rates you supply, not a tax return. For an exact figure use IRS worksheets or a qualified tax professional.
  • It does not model business-expense deductions, the standard deduction, the deductible half of self-employment tax, retirement contributions, or state and local specifics.
  • In a full calculation, self-employment tax applies to 92.35% of net earnings up to the Social Security wage base; here your entered rate is applied flatly to after-fee income as a simplification.
  • It does not include FICA withholding from any W-2 income you might also have.

Worked example

$50/hr × 120 billable = $6,000. Minus 10% platform ($600) and 2.75% processing ($165) = $5,235. Minus a 22% + 15.3% reserve ($1,953) → $3,282 cash; across 145 total hours that is $22.64 effective/hr.
