Etsy Fees Explained: Every Fee Sellers Pay

Etsy charges multiple fees that stack on top of each other. Many new sellers are surprised when they calculate their actual profit after all fees are deducted. Knowing each fee helps you price products correctly and see your net margin.

The 5 Main Etsy Fees

1. Listing Fee - $0.20 per item

Every time you list or relist an item, Etsy charges $0.20. This fee applies whether the item sells or not. Listings expire after 4 months and auto-renew (another $0.20) unless you turn off auto-renew. If you sell a multi-quantity listing, each sale triggers a new $0.20 listing fee for the renewal.

2. Transaction Fee - 6.5% of sale price

When an item sells, Etsy takes 6.5% of the total sale price including shipping. This is the largest fee for most sellers. If you charge $50 for an item plus $5 shipping, the transaction fee is 6.5% of $55 = $3.58.

3. Payment Processing Fee - 3% + $0.25

Etsy Payments (the mandatory payment system in most countries) charges 3% + $0.25 per transaction. This is similar to what Stripe or PayPal charge, but you have no choice of processor on Etsy. The rate varies slightly by country.

4. Offsite Ads Fee - 15% (or 12% for high-volume sellers)

Etsy runs ads for your products on Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. If a buyer clicks an offsite ad and purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the sale price for shops under $10,000 in annual sales. Shops at this level can opt out of the program. Once a shop crosses $10,000 in annual sales, the rate drops to 12%, but participation becomes mandatory and cannot be opted out of.

5. Etsy Plus - $10/month (optional)

Etsy Plus gives you shop customization features, credits for listings and ads, and discounts on custom domains. It is optional and most sellers do not need it when starting out.

Total Fee Stack - Worked Example

Scenario: You sell a handmade item for $45 + $5 shipping. Cost of goods is $12. No offsite ad click.

Listing fee: $0.20
Transaction fee: 6.5% × $50 = $3.25
Processing fee: 3% × $50 + $0.25 = $1.75
Total Etsy fees: $5.20
Revenue after fees: $50 - $5.20 = $44.80
Profit after COGS: $44.80 - $12 = $32.80
Net margin: 65.6%

With offsite ad (15%): Add $7.50 → profit drops to $25.30 (50.6% margin)

How to Price for Profit on Etsy

Many sellers make the mistake of pricing based on materials cost alone. You need to account for all fees plus your time. A useful formula:

Break-even price = (Costs + Fixed fees) ÷ (1 - Percentage fees) - Shipping charged Costs = materials + labor + your shipping cost + packaging Fixed fees = $0.20 listing + $0.25 payment processing = $0.45 Percentage fees = 6.5% transaction + 3% processing = 9.5%, so the divisor is 0.905

The listing fee and the $0.25 payment fee are flat amounts, so they belong in the numerator, not folded into a percentage. Shipping you charge the buyer is revenue that also carries the percentage fees, which is why it is subtracted at the end rather than added to costs.

Worked example. Materials $8, labor $6, your shipping cost $4.50, packaging $1, and you charge the buyer $5 shipping. Costs are $19.50. Add $0.45 in fixed fees to get $19.95. Divide by 0.905 to get $22.04, then subtract the $5 you charge for shipping: $17.04 is the price at which this order breaks even before tax. To target a margin instead of break-even, divide by (0.905 - your target margin) instead.

If the order comes through an offsite ad, the offsite fee is charged on the order total as well, so the divisor drops rather than rises: at the 15% rate it becomes 0.905 - 0.15 = 0.755, and at 12% it becomes 0.785. That fee is capped at $100 per order, so on high-value orders the percentage model overstates it.

Where Sellers Lose Money

  • Forgetting shipping is fee-taxed. Etsy charges the 6.5% transaction fee on the shipping amount too, not just the item price.
  • Misunderstanding offsite ads. Shops under $10,000/year can opt out, but those at $10,000+/year are required to participate (at the lower 12% rate). Track which side of the threshold you are on.
  • Not tracking listing fee renewals. Multi-quantity listings renew on each sale. High-volume sellers can spend $50+/month on listing fees alone.
  • Underpricing for "competitiveness." A $15 item with $5 in materials leaves almost nothing after fees. Know your breakeven.

Etsy Ads vs Offsite Ads

Etsy runs two separate ad programs, and sellers mix them up constantly. Etsy Ads (onsite) promote your listings inside Etsy search results. You set a daily budget and pay per click whether or not the click converts. A $5 daily budget with 40 clicks and zero orders still costs you $5.

Offsite ads work in reverse. Etsy places your products on Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest at no upfront cost. You pay only when a shopper clicks one of those ads and orders within 30 days: 15% of the order for shops under $10,000 in annual sales, 12% for shops above it, capped at $100 per order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out; shops above it cannot.

The practical difference: Etsy Ads are a spend you control and can pause tomorrow. Offsite ads are a margin cut you cannot time, so if you are opted in, price with the 15% in mind.

Shipping Labels and Currency Fees

Two smaller charges surprise people on their seller statements. Etsy shipping labels let you buy USPS, FedEx, or other carrier postage directly through Etsy, often below retail counter rates. The label cost is not a percentage fee; it is charged to your payment account, so track it as a per-order cost.

The currency conversion fee is easier to miss. If your listings are priced in one currency and your bank account is in another, Etsy converts the money and keeps 2.5%. A seller depositing $1,000 a month of USD sales into a non-USD bank account loses $25 a month to conversion. The fix: list in the same currency as your bank account whenever Etsy supports it.

Pricing So the Fees Do Not Eat You

The fixed parts of the fee stack, the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 processing flat fee, hit cheap items much harder than expensive ones. Here is the same fee math on a $15 item and a $35 item, both with free shipping:

$15 item: listing $0.20 + transaction (6.5% of $15) $0.98 + processing (3% of $15 + $0.25) $0.70 = $1.88 in fees, 12.5% of the price. With $4 materials and $4 postage, you keep $5.12.

$35 item: listing $0.20 + transaction (6.5% of $35) $2.28 + processing (3% of $35 + $0.25) $1.30 = $3.78 in fees, 10.8% of the price. With $8 materials and $4 postage, you keep $19.22.

The $35 item costs twice as much to make but leaves nearly four times the dollars.

Run your own numbers in the Etsy profit calculator before you set a price. If you are weighing Etsy against Amazon, the Amazon FBA fees breakdown covers referral, fulfillment, and storage fees so you can compare like for like.

When a Sale Actually Loses Money

This bites hardest on cheap items with free shipping. Take a $12 item with $5 in materials and $4.50 in postage you cover yourself. Etsy fees run $1.59 ($0.20 listing + $0.78 transaction + $0.61 processing), leaving $10.41. Subtract postage and materials and you are at $0.91, before counting your time. If that order came through an offsite ad, the 15% fee takes another $1.80 and the sale ends at a loss of $0.89.

Watch the gross-versus-net gap at tax time too. For 2026, the federal 1099-K threshold is $20,000 in gross payments and 200 transactions, and the form reports gross sales, not what remains after fees and costs. A shop can receive a 1099-K showing $25,000 while keeping a fraction of that. Our 1099-K threshold guide covers what the form does and does not mean for your taxes.
